Description
The TQC Sheen Bresle Patches are self‑adhesive extraction patches used to determine the level of soluble salt contamination on prepared metal surfaces before coating application. These patches form a sealed test cell that allows inspectors to extract salts such as chlorides, sulphates and nitrates from the surface using deionised water.
Soluble salt contamination is one of the most common causes of premature coating failure. If salts remain on the surface during coating application, they can attract moisture due to their hygroscopic nature, leading to blistering, corrosion and coating delamination over time.
Bresle patches are an essential component of the Bresle method, where water is injected into the sealed patch area to dissolve contaminants present on the substrate. The extracted solution is then analysed using a conductivity meter to determine the concentration of dissolved salts on the surface.
Designed for reliable and repeatable results, these patches feature a known test area and a durable membrane to ensure accurate extraction and clean removal after testing.
⸻
Why Bresle Patches Are Important
Even after abrasive blasting, invisible salt residues may remain on steel surfaces. A too high level of salts may cause coating failures. When coatings are applied over contaminated surfaces, these salts can draw moisture through the coating system, which may lead to:
•Osmotic blistering
•Accelerated corrosion
•Reduced coating adhesion
•Premature coating failure
This might cause major problems and increase maintenance costs for shipping, vessels, ballast tanks, oil and gas piping, industry buildings and steel structures in general. That’s why measuring the level of salts prior to coating is essential.
Bresle patches enable inspectors to verify surface cleanliness and confirm that contamination levels meet project specifications before coating application.
⸻
How It Works
Bresle patches are used to test for surface contaminants, such as salts. The patch is described in ISO 8502-6 and -9, also known as the Bresle Method. This Bresle method is commonly used to measure the level of surface salts prior to coating.
- Clean and prepare the test surface according to the project specification.
- Remove the protective backing and apply the Bresle patch firmly to the surface to create a sealed test area.
- Inject a measured amount of deionised water into the patch using a syringe.
- Gently circulate the water inside the patch to dissolve soluble salts present on the surface.
- Extract the test solution from the patch.
- Measure the conductivity of the solution using a conductivity meter.
- Convert the result to salt concentration (mg/m²) according to the Bresle calculation method.
This process allows inspectors to determine whether the surface meets the required cleanliness level prior to coating application.
