Description
Because non-Newtonian fluids change their viscosity depending on the applied shear rate, the Cone and Plate Viscometer maintains precise control of this parameter. The instrument operates at a defined shear rate of 10,000 s⁻¹ (BS / ISO) or 12,000 s⁻¹ (ASTM). These shear rates are widely accepted as representative of typical paint application methods such as brushing or roller application, ensuring that test results closely reflect real-world performance.
Since viscosity measurements are highly sensitive to temperature variations, the test sample is placed on a temperature-controlled plate. The plate temperature can be accurately set and maintained between 5 °C and 65 °C, ensuring stable, repeatable and reliable measurement conditions.
⸻
How It Works
- Ensure the cone and plate are clean.
- Set the required test temperature on the temperature-controlled plate.
- Select and install the appropriate cone for the desired viscosity range.
- Place a small sample of the test material on the plate surface (see manual for recommended sample volumes).
- Lower the cone gently onto the plate, allowing the sample to evenly fill the gap between cone and plate.
- At least 15 seconds should be allowed to reach plate temperature (longer if sample temperature is significantly different)
- Start the measurement; the cone rotates at a controlled speed, applying a uniform shear rate to the sample.
- The torque required to maintain rotation is measured and converted into dynamic viscosity values.
- Record the result as required
- After testing, raise the cone and clean the cone and plate surfaces.
- Lower the plate onto the cone to keep it at the plate temperature for the next test.
