Description
The TQC Sheen Conical Bend Test (Conical Mandrel) is a precision test method used to assess the flexibility and mechanical integrity of coatings, paints and surface finishes. The test involves bending a coated panel over a conical mandrel, which creates a continuous range of radii in a single motion. As the coated surface wraps around the tapered mandrel, the point at which cracking or tearing first occurs provides insight into the coating’s resistance to deformation.
This technique enables detailed evaluation of a coating’s performance under bending stress and is commonly used in formulation research, comparative studies and quality control environments to understand how coatings behave under varying mechanical strain. How It Works
- Place the coated test panel face-up against the fixed conical mandrel of the bend tester.
- Secure the panel using the clamping screw to hold it firmly in place.
- Bend the panel along the conical mandrel in a smooth, controlled motion from the wide end to the narrow end.
- Observe the coating carefully as the radius decreases along the cone.
- Identify the point where cracking, tearing or other coating failure first occurs.
- Record the position along the mandrel to evaluate coating flexibility and deformation behaviour.
- Compare the results against internal criteria or applicable standards.
The fixed conical mandrel ensures a consistent, repeatable bending gradient, highlighting exactly where a coating begins to fail under progressive stress.
